Concord Community Garden enjoyed a busy and productive year, driven by enthusiastic and hard-working members.
Gardens
Members continued to work in two groups across our communal beds, using crop rotation and companion planting to grow bountiful crops. Additional flowers enhanced pollination and added beauty, while careful pruning helped our citrus trees flourish.
Dedicated volunteers collected vegetable scraps from a local supermarket and Flemington Market to feed our worm farms. A flourishing native edible garden bed followed our successful Bush Foods workshop, and Neighbourhood Greens donated soil from its microgreen production to supplement our compost and garden beds.
We replaced the former strawberry bed with two space-saving strawberry towers made from recycled materials. Volunteers also dismantled two deteriorating timber beds and constructed corrugated metal replacements. Salvaged timber was reused to create a welcoming native garden near the entrance.
Activities and visitors
New printed flyers were distributed to local organisations, and the garden’s Facebook and Instagram pages were re-established. We welcomed boys and carers from the Jesus Group of Strathfield Chinese Christian Church for a garden tour and afternoon tea.
Biosecurity officers from the Department of Primary Industries installed insect traps as part of their pest and plant-disease survey. The City of Canada Bay also organised a well-attended school-holiday insect hotel workshop delivered by UrbanGrow.
Open Day
Our October Open Day attracted an encouraging number of visitors. The City of Canada Bay funded a home-composting workshop and its annual compost-bin and worm-farm giveaway. The NSW Beekeepers Association and Neighbourhood Greens added stalls, knowledge and interest.
Grants and membership
A City of Canada Bay Community Grant supported development of this new website. An Environmental Grant will help fund two community workshops, a grandparents and grandchildren morning, and essential soil, fertiliser and mulch.
Membership grew from 15 to 17 across the year. Our Saturday meetings and fortnightly working bees remained well attended.
